Following Rishi Sunak’s fine for not wearing a seatbelt, drivers, and passengers are being urged to check when wearing a seatbelt is a legal requirement.
Here are 5 times when you don’t need to
wear one.
Driving a taxi: While taxi drivers are not
legally obliged to wear a seat belt, at Alpha Taxis Sheffield, we always
do.
Reversing: Drivers can remove their seat
belts when reversing to help them shift in their seats and get a better view
behind them. But it must be put back on before driving forwards.
No seatbelt: In classic cars (produced
before 1965) where no seatbelt is available, there is no law that states one
must be fitted. However, children under 3 cannot ride in vehicles without a
seat belt. Children over 3 can only sit in the back of the car.
Driving goods vehicles on deliveries:
Drivers who stop frequently and no fewer than 50 meters between stops do not
need to wear a seatbelt for that part of their journey.
Medical exemptions: There are some medical
exemptions for which drivers must have a certificate from their doctor which
must be kept in the car to present to police on request. They must also inform
their insurance company.
So, there you have it. Five times that you
don’t need to wear a seat belt.
